PRODUCTION & OEE

01

Explaining a production loss requires more than the equipment log.

Equipment records show operating states and events. Production records identify the order, product and shift. Maintenance history documents interventions, while quality records capture inspection results and rejected output.

These sources describe different aspects of the same production period. Investigating a shortfall requires aligning them around the relevant equipment, timestamps and production run.

A recorded stop establishes that equipment was not running. Determining why it stopped may require operator observations, material availability, maintenance records or information about a quality hold. Missing timestamps and incomplete reason codes can limit the conclusions.

The investigation needs to distinguish what the records establish, what they suggest and what still requires inspection.

02

Connect the records around a defined production problem.

NOVV links approved equipment and operating sources to support investigation of production losses. The scope is defined around the equipment, process and questions being assessed.

Relevant events are connected to production orders, products, schedules, maintenance history and quality records. Where the available data supports it, teams can examine recurring losses by equipment, product run or shift and identify affected production commitments.

Definitions and data gaps are reviewed with the responsible teams. An observed association between events is treated as evidence for investigation; it does not, by itself, establish the cause.

The resulting view supports production, maintenance and quality teams in reviewing the same records, agreeing follow-up work and assessing subsequent performance.

Questions to investigate
Where is production time being lost?
Which losses recur under comparable conditions?
What do maintenance and quality records add to the event history?
Which production orders and schedules are affected?
Published industry example

In January 2023, the World Economic Forum reported that CEAT's plant in Halol, India, reduced cycle times by 20% and process scrap by 46%. The plant used advanced analytics to optimize cycle times and digitized the operator's work steps.

This is an external industry example, not a NOVV project or a forecast of results for a NOVV engagement.

03

Establish the calculation before comparing the result.

OEE combines availability, performance and quality. Reviewing the individual components helps distinguish losses associated with downtime, reduced operating speed and rejected output.

The calculation depends on defined inputs: planned production time, ideal cycle time and counts of total and good output. Those definitions need to be appropriate to the equipment and production process.

NOVV works with the responsible teams to agree the measurement rules and retain access to the supporting records. Changes in definitions are identified when results are compared.

Interventions are reviewed against an agreed baseline. Relevant measures can include downtime duration, response time, changeover duration, scrap and individual OEE components. Differences in product mix and operating conditions are considered when interpreting the findings.

Start with a defined production loss.

The initial assessment covers the loss being investigated, the available records and the existing measurement rules. These establish the scope of the connections, analysis and operating view required.
